Baton “Send Off”
Baton Relay in Yarmouth
As part of the celebrations to mark the Centenary of the national movement of the WI in 2015, a baton was created which would journey around the country, being taken to every WI County Federation in England and Wales.
The baton was to be passed from county to county by members of local WIs, and events to be held to commemorate its arrival and stay of a week.
Whilst events were organised at every WI on the island during our week of “hosting” the baton (arranged during a road tour to every single WI on the island), Yarmouth was lucky enough to host the final event of the tour before it was delivered on to Dorset Federation.
Members of Yarmouth WI welcomed the Baton and Federation Board members with a champagne reception, held in the sailing club. Everyone had a chance to hold the Baton as we marvelled that by the end of its 18 month journey, it would have visited 7000 WIs and every single one of the national 212,000 members would potentially have handled the same Baton.
Once we had drunk all the bubbly, it was time for Federation Chair and Vice-Chair, Anne Longford DL and Sue Biss, to take the Baton over to the mainland. We managed to hold up the Wightlink ferry for a few moments to take our photos for posterity. Another first for the WI!
