We started knitting for the neonatal units at St Mary’s hospital on the island, and for Queen Alexandra hospital in Portsmouth, in December 2014. Both hospitals needed lots of very small items which cannot be bough. We knit and crochet cardigans, hats and cot blankets. For QA the chest size is 25 to 32cms (10 to 12 inches) and for St Mary’s 32 t0 41cms (12 to 16 inches).
In the first 12 months we produced a total of 93 cardigans, 132 hats, 43 cot blankets and 19 ventilator bonnets (these bonnets are only for QA). Both hospitals are grateful for everything they receive.
We are still knitting for the neonatal units as well as producing scarves and hats for the primary children on the Island and pairs of hearts for the end of life ward at St Mary’s. We are just starting on Twiddle Muffs for the dementia ward. The more the merrier if you want to join us.
